Imperial’s Mari hoping to win elusive championship

If a baseball game is entering the fifth inning, and one of the pitchers is taking a 13-run lead to the mound, he’s got to feel pretty comfortable.


Sure, unless the starting pitcher is Lance Mari.

Converting that baseball analogy to dirt track racing at Cocopah Speedway, putting Mari in command of the IMCA Modified Division point standings as the 2014 Cocopah Speedway Racing Series approaches the midway point, nothing is guaranteed for the veteran driver, not after Mari watched both a 42-point lead and his bid for the 2013 track driving crown disappear.

Entering Saturday night’s Round 5 in the racing series, the driver from Imperial is 13 points ahead of his nearest challenger, Yuma’s Ty Rogers. Normally, that would be a cushion any driver would love to have, considering how hard it is under normal circumstances to make up points on another driver.
