Simala gets thrilling win at Cocopah Speedway

Brett Simala led only one lap Saturday night.

Fortunately for him, it was the most important one.

Simala caught Joey Haines on the final lap of the 15-lap Pro-Stock Division feature event at Cocopah Speedway, passed Haines and got to the checkered flag first to win for the first time in 2014.

“It seems like it’s been so dang long for us,” said Simala of his absence from victory lane since the last race of the 2013 season, when he won eight feature events.

“It’s been only a few races but we’ve had so many weird mechanical problems and things like that, and we’ve finally got everything figured out and the car is good.”

That was obvious Saturday night as Simala steadily tracked down Haines, who had bolted out to a commanding lead in the division finale. Simala closed the gap on each lap, and entering the white flag lap he was less than a bumper behind Haines. Entering Turns 1 and 2, Simala moved alongside Haines, and the two raced down the back straight into Turns 3 and 4. Simala was then quicker on the exit.
