Cocopah Speedway Announces Action Packed 2014 Schedule

Somerton, Arizona (December 19, 2013) – An action packed year is coming to the “Diamond in the Desert.”  Cocopah Speedway has released it’s 2014 schedule, which features several special events and an increase in the number of local race dates.  In all, fans can look forward to 26 nights of race action in 2014 at the Somerton, Arizona oval, including several Friday/Saturday night doubleheaders.  The season opens on Saturday, January 4th.

All five of Cocopah Speedway’s popular local divisions return to action for 2014, along with two visits by the American Sprint Car Series National Tour, an expanded IMCA Winter Nationals, a 4th of July Demolition Derby, a Late Model Shootout and Cocopah Speedway’s popular Thanksgiving weekend Turkey Classic.  Cocopah Speedway Director of Operations Greg Burgess said, “there’s something for all fans of racing in our 2014 schedule and I’m excited about the prospects for the coming year.”  Three Powder Puff races for the ladies are also included in the schedule, and Cocopah Speedway hosts it’s first ever Motorsports and Racers Swapmeet.  The swapmeet, set for Saturday, January 11th, is an event that Burgess hopes to hold annually.

The season opens on January 4th, with round #1 in the Cocopah Speedway Racing Series, featuring action in the Napa Auto Parts IMCA Hobby Stocks, the IMCA Northern Sport Modifieds, the Fisher Automotive Street Stocks, Pro Stocks and the IMCA Modifieds.  The series will run for a total of 17 events in 2014, concluding in December.  “These guys are doing a great job, investing in their cars and their programs and it shows on the track,” said Burgess, who noted that the local race dates are more spread out this year, with less back to back weekends, making it easier to attend for racers and race fans alike.

IMCA Modifieds, Hobby Stocks, and Sport Mods from all over the country will compete in February at Cocopah Speedway’s 3rd annual IMCA Winter Nationals.  The event is expanding this year to four race nights over two consecutive weekends in early February.  “It’s the best of the best from throughout the United States,” said Burgess, who added that pre-entries are already coming in and that car count could easily be one of the largest of the year.

Sprint cars take center stage twice in 2014, with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour opening and closing it’s season at Cocopah Speedway.  Friday/Saturday night doubleheaders for the winged sprints are set for both appearances, the first coming on February 28th with the second two day show coming in November.  Street Stocks/IMCA Stock Cars will run on the undercard of the first sprint car weekend, while in November a special Late Model Shootout will co-headline the weekend.  Burgess said, “we’re extremely grateful that the Lucas Oil ASCS has again honored us by choosing Cocopah Speedway as the site to both open and close it’s season.  It’s a testament to the support shown by our fans and the hospitality that the sprint car teams have enjoyed here in the past.”

Along with the Sprint Cars, March 1st will also mark the opening of the Cocopah Mini Speedway, built for .25 (quarter scale) midgets, mini-dwarf cars, and karts, in support of youth racing in the Yuma area.  It will be an open track day and anyone with one of the lil’ cars is encouraged to attend.  The Mini Speedway opening will be at 10am so that everyone can be ready to watch a night of action on the big track as well.  The Mini Speedway will also be in action the mornings of July 4th and November 15th.

Following the end of the season’s first half in mid-June, Cocopah Speedway will again host a special 4th of July Demolition Derby, in conjunction with fireworks at Cocopah Casino.  Burgess said that additional enhancements are in the works for the July 4th event, a traditional Yuma area favorite.

The season’s second half kicks off in September with IMCA Championship Weekend.  The Cocopah Speedway Fall Series opens up a five event run in October, and in November the Lucas Oil ASCS arrives for it’s championship finale along with the Late Model Shootout on November 14th and 15th.  Another November highlight is the 5th annual Turkey Classic, which brought in a record breaking number of cars during it’s last go-round.  The 2014 season concludes with the final round of racing in the Cocopah Speedway Racing Series on December 6th.

Racing begins at 7:00pm for all 2014 events at Cocopah Speedway, with main gates open at 5:00pm for all Cocopah Speedway Racing Series events, and one hour earlier for special events.  Season Pass Holders, Skybox Tickets & Suite Tickets will be admitted 30 minutes prior to General Admission.  Pit Gates for all events open at 2:00pm.
