Noriega, Toth big winners at Turkey Classic

Adolfo Noriega and Chris Toth had Thanksgiving weekends to  remember.

Noriega, from Yuma, helped himself to two feature event wins in the  Street Stock Division during the fourth annual Cocopah Speedway Turkey Classic,  while Toth, from Holtville, won the Friday night IMCA Sport Modified feature and  like Noriega went back for seconds on Saturday night.

They were the only  drivers to win on both nights of what turned out to be a record-setting event  at the Somerton track. When the program began on Friday, an all-time high of 110  cars were parked in the pit, breaking the old mark of 73. And 104 showed up for  the Saturday night show.

The field also included 45 IMCA Modifieds for Friday  night’s show. A field of 43 was on hand for the IMCA Winter Nationals in  February.

“I guess we’re going to need a bigger pit,” said a grinning Greg  Burgess, Cocopah Speedway’s director of operations.

“I am not sure it has  really set in yet just how big it is to have over 100 cars here for two nights  of racing. This is great for the entire community.”
